I\u2019ve read about two-thirds of Chris Beat Cancer<\/em> and am thinking of switching to a plant-based diet for the first time in a long while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I first tried this approach around the year 2000 (when I was about 26) after reading Fit for Life<\/em>; although I rarely drank alcohol back then, I smoked every day, so I decided that I should at least try to make my diet healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, I couldn’t keep it up because trying to buy organic ingredients and filling up on vegetables made my food costs skyrocket, and it severely limited my dining options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second phase was around 2013 (when I was about 38), a time when I had started an email newsletter to share information on relationships and health. I came across an exercise in an audio program by James Skinner (the man who popularized The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People<\/em> in Japan) that suggested giving up alcohol and caffeine for three weeks. This reminded me of the book Fit for Life<\/em>. Although I wasn’t drinking alcohol at the time, my smoking habits fluctuated\u2014alternating between smoking daily for six months and then not touching a cigarette for another six months. Deciding I should cook for myself a bit more, I experimented with a plant-based diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this period, I gradually took up jogging and strength training. Wanting to build muscle, I started consuming plant-based protein supplements, but I eventually began to wonder if eating meat might actually be better. Before I knew it, I had abandoned the plant-based diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although I haven’t smoked at all for about ten years now (as of 2026), I\u2019ve started consuming alcohol instead; furthermore, a health checkup four years ago revealed traces of blood in my stool, and a subsequent endoscopy found three polyps\u2014each around 1 cm in size\u2014which were removed on the spot. Given this history and my fear of conditions like colorectal cancer, I am trying to abstain from alcohol as much as possible and focus on a plant-based diet.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
